Good Deeds Make Bad Stories

Syra had never seen the Soul Realm’s palace from the outside. Gloomy architecture, black stone, three wings, and an extensive courtyard now covered in vines and crumbling. The fountains were long dried up or frozen, but she could see old paintings along the stone floor that must have once been grand. The paint was long faded and chipped. Networks of grimy marble cut through the stone, and statues of ravens decorated intricate iron bars that garnished the top of stone walls along the courtyard and entrance. Several Guardians walked about, along with a few Gor-Geíons.

Syra and Sekar were crouched behind a cluster of fallen trees, their hot breaths turning to mist. They’d finally made it. The blackened branches were brittle, and so they had to be careful with where they placed their weight. A broken branch was pressed against her calf, and she did her best to shift without snapping the thing in half. It worked, and she looked at Sekar.

“What’s the plan?”

He spun around, back against bark. “I’ve got something in mind.”

The Onye sat behind, quiet. She couldn’t believe how clever they were. Sekar’s features shifted, the air around him rippled, and before her was Kar, the man she’d once trusted with her life. No injuries or signs of the last few days showed. She tensed, not liking the memories that washed over her. It had been them against the world for so long, and now the Guardian illusion was only a weapon.

His fiery red gaze met hers. “Stay here.”

He stood and brushed off some of the leaves. Death’s Sword was strapped to his hip, and the iconic Guardian cloak looked untouched by the terror of their past few days. She grabbed his leg, and he looked down at her.

“Are you telling me that sword is real?”

Sekar laid a hand on the prestigious hilt. “As real as I want it to be.” With that, he started his walk toward the palace with a confident stride, head high. Syra watched, the branch uncomfortably digging into her leg. Next to her, the Onye appeared.

They were too close, but she was trying to remind herself that this creature was nearly as old as the God. Zari was what Sekar called her. It was endearing when she removed the stories that inspired nightmares. The Onye looked at her, blinked, and returned to watching Sekar.

The God-turned-Guardian approached the palace and nodded toward the other Guardians. They didn’t react, not until he got closer. Then they took a double take, stopped, and opened their mouths to say something. In quick succession, Sekar unsheathed Death’s Sword and drove it into the closest one. Madness erupted, but the God had a blade across the second Guardian’s throat in a heartbeat. Gor-Geíons flooded the area, coming up from behind in clunky fashion. Unperturbed, Sekar swung Death’s Sword around in a clean beheading, killing two instantly. Demon heads rolled, and he turned to the next Geíon as it lunged for him.

The Onye launched from her place and started a run toward the palace.
